The Research Association “Lungenkinder” is an association under the Austrian Association Act. It was launched in 1999 by Gerald Fischer. At the time, RAINHARD FENDRICH was the chairman, who himself experienced the fate of losing a beloved child.

After 3 years of wandering from one doctor to the next, the small Maleen Fischer, was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and was sent home as incurable with a life expectancy of 2-3 years.

Gerald Fischer found help in New York where a research and care center of the Columbia University under the guidance of Dr. Barst was located. Answering the question of the possibilities of cure Dr. Barst replied “Give me 10 million Dollars and I will find a cure in 3 years!“, as at there were too little patients for fundamental research.

So it was depending on the money if patients survived or not! Of course, the funding of $ 10 million is not so easy, but a start should be done.

Doctors from Austria were trained in America and organized an international symposium in Vienna. The first research project initiated at the Vienna AKH was very promising and received EU funding in 2003. The research association “Lungenkinder” (former “KINDER PPH Forschungszentrum”) was  awarded in 2001  with the “Health Prize of the City of Vienna” by Fr. Pittermann.

Researching for a life without pulmonary hypertension!
